European Elections Green Wave

Following on from a fantastic showing at the Local Elections on 2nd May, the Green Party picked up over 11,000 votes across South Glos in the European Elections, pushing the Tories and Labour into 4th and 5th place locally.

Down the road in Bristol, the Greens came first picking up over 35% of the vote. The South West and Gibraltar returned Molly Scott Cato MEP to the European Parliament with an increased vote share. The other winners in the region were the Brexit Party with 3 MEPs and Liberal Democrats with 2 MEPs. Nationally, the Greens more than doubled their MEP count, with 2 million votes and 7 MEPs being elected across England.

Across Europe, the Green Wave rolled onwards. The Green group in the European Parliament gained a total of 20 new MEPs, moving up to the 4th largest group in the Parliament. The collapse in the two main establishment parties was echoed elsewhere, with the centre left (S&D) and centre right (EPP) groups that had run the Parliament in coalition losing their combined majority.
