Information for election day

Vote Green May 6th banner.

Tomorrow in South Glos, as elsewhere, we go to the polls. Here are some key things to know about what is happening in this year’s election.

Where do I vote?
You should have received a polling card through the post, which will tell you where your polling station is. You can also check online here. Note: this might have changed since the last time you voted.

When are the polls open?
Polling stations will be open from 07:00 to 22:00 on election day.

What are we voting for?
Most voters in South Glos will have two ballots, for West of England Mayor and for Police and Crime Commissioner. In Frenchay and Downend, people can also vote for a council position. Read more about these roles, how they are decided and who the Green candidates are in this post.

What might be different because of COVID-19?
We haven’t been able to find information from South Glos Council but this article in Bristol Post outlines some of the things happening differently at polling stations in Bristol. As with other indoor spaces, voters should wear masks, unless exempt, and follow social distancing. There is also the request that voters bring their own pencils if possible.

What if I need to self-isolate?
Nomination of other people for proxy voting has closed but if you have COVID symptoms, or have been asked to self-isolate, you can get an emergency proxy vote until 17:00 on polling day. You will need to fill in this form if that is the case.

When will we know the results?
COVID-19 measures may mean counting takes longer. We might not hear the results until the weekend or even Monday, according to this BBC article.
